Infinite Resume vsOverleaf

This is not a comparison between two resume builders. Overleaf is a collaborative LaTeX editor built for research papers, and people make resumes on it by opening a community template such as Jake’s Resume. That distinction is the whole decision: you are choosing between writing a typesetting language and using a builder that typesets for you.

Are these solving the same problem?

They are not solving the same problem. Overleaf solves "I want complete control of a typeset document." We solve "I want a correct resume without learning a markup language." A reader who wants the first should use Overleaf, and this page says so rather than pretending otherwise.

Choose Infinite Resume when

  • You want a typeset PDF without learning LaTeX — this is the reason most people searching for a resume builder are searching at all.
  • You want the resume checked for ATS parsing and keyword coverage, which a document editor does not do.
  • You do not want to inherit a community template whose last update predates the conventions you are applying under.

Choose Overleaf when

  • You already write LaTeX, in which case the learning curve is not a cost and the control is real.
  • You need byte-level control over spacing, packages or a custom class that no builder will expose.
  • You are writing an academic CV alongside papers and want them in one place with the same toolchain and bibliography.
  • You want the resume source in version control as plain text you own outright.

Common questions

Is Overleaf a resume builder?
No. Overleaf is a collaborative LaTeX editor built for typesetting documents, most commonly academic papers. Resumes are made on it by opening a community-contributed template and editing the LaTeX source.
Is a LaTeX resume better for ATS?
Not inherently. What matters to a parser is whether the PDF contains selectable text in a predictable reading order, which both a LaTeX document and a well-built template PDF can produce. LaTeX gives you more control over the layout; it does not by itself make a resume parse better.
Should I use Jake’s Resume?
It is a clean, widely used template, and if you are comfortable in LaTeX it is a reasonable starting point. Its Overleaf template page records a last update of six years ago, so check its conventions against what you are applying under rather than assuming they are current.
