What Amazon publishes about these roles

This is an independent guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon. It is for someone with a few years of data work who wants a Data Scientist role at Amazon in India, and it helps with two decisions: which of Amazon's science and analytics roles to apply for, and what the resume has to show so the interviews have something to work with. Amazon lists India among the countries where it hires for science roles. Everything here about Amazon comes from its own careers pages; the resume itself is an illustration.

Data Scientist

Amazon calls its data scientists the link between the business, customers and technology: they define new metrics, build new tools and work on machine learning solutions. The resume is read for metrics you defined and models a team actually used.

Applied Scientist

Amazon's applied scientists develop new models and algorithms for practical problems, and its student pages say they design complete systems and lead production-level projects. Apply here if your record is shipped systems rather than analysis.

Research Scientist

Amazon describes research scientists as specialists who start and run scientific research projects and work with software engineers to put algorithms into practice. The resume has to show research you designed, not only models you trained.

Business Intelligence Engineer

Amazon's BIEs define KPIs, automate data pipelines and build reports and dashboards, and Amazon expects them to be proficient in SQL. If most of your work is SQL, reporting and pipelines, this is the closer match.

The hiring steps

Amazon publishes interview guides for Applied Scientist, Research Scientist and Business Intelligence Engineer roles, but not one for Data Scientist. These are the steps its science guides share.

  1. 1Apply to a specific opening. You move to a phone screen only if you meet the basic qualifications listed for that role.
  2. 2One or two technical phone screens, depending on the team. Each lasts 60 minutes, is with a senior leader, and mixes behavioural and technical questions.
  3. 3An interview loop of four 55-minute interviews with members of the science community. Different interviewers are assigned the technical areas and the Leadership Principles.
  4. 4A decision within five business days of the loop.
  5. 5Business Intelligence Engineer applicants take an online assessment first, and have seven days to finish it.

Change the emphasis for your Data Scientist career stage

Keep the role vocabulary, but choose proof that matches the experience you actually have.

Fresher or career starter

Lead with relevant education, projects, internships, and demonstrated Python or SQL skills. Remove senior-scale claims.

The one your record already matches. Amazon describes Data Scientists as defining metrics and building models for the business, Applied Scientists as building new models and algorithms into complete systems, Research Scientists as running research projects, and Business Intelligence Engineers as owning KPIs, SQL and dashboards. A resume written for one of these reads weakly for the others, so choose before you write.

Should I name Amazon's Leadership Principles on my resume?

Not as a list. Amazon says a significant part of its interviews covers how you have shown the Leadership Principles in past jobs, and it asks for answers with metrics or data where they apply. What helps is bullets that already hold a situation, what you did and a measured result, because each one becomes an interview answer. A skills line reading "Customer Obsession" proves nothing.

What does Amazon's interview process look like for science roles?

Amazon's guides for applied and research scientists describe the same path: an application checked against the role's basic qualifications, one or two 60-minute technical phone screens with a senior leader, then a loop of four 55-minute interviews covering technical areas and the Leadership Principles. Amazon says the outcome of the loop comes within five business days.

How is applying as a Business Intelligence Engineer different?

There is an online assessment before any interview. Amazon's guide lists three parts: a SQL challenge, a section on working with SQL, and a work-styles section. You have seven days from when the link is sent, and Amazon says you will hear within two business days whether you move forward. Some BIE candidates go straight to the interview loop without a phone screen.

Will tailoring my resume to Amazon guarantee an interview?

No. Amazon's guides say a phone screen follows only if you meet the basic qualifications for the role, and every later step is a live interview. Tailoring makes your fit for one role family easy to see; it does not decide the screens or the loop.

What should the bullets on a data scientist resume show?

The work the occupation is defined by. The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET profile for Data Scientists starts with analysing large data sets with statistical software, turning results into charts, testing and validating models, and presenting results to management. For Amazon, add the metrics you defined and what a team did with your model.
