Start from a single-column template
The template gallery can be filtered by layout. Carnegie Mellon's and Penn's career offices both advise one column, and Penn adds no tables, graphics, text boxes, icons or photos. A single-column template starts you inside that advice instead of fighting it.
Keep every word in the body of the page
Put your name and contact details on the page itself, not in a header or footer, which Carnegie Mellon tells students to leave empty. Use plain section headings such as Education, Experience and Skills so the system can file each part where it belongs.
Use the posting's own words where they are true
USAJOBS gives the clearest example: if a qualification names MS Project, your resume needs the words MS Project. Job tailoring compares your resume with one pasted job description and proposes line-by-line changes for you to accept; it draws on AI credits.
Scan the draft for parsing risk
The resume check reads the document for structure and common parsing risks and returns the lines it objects to. It grades your file, not any employer's system, so treat what it returns as a list of things to fix.
Export a text PDF, then read the portal's rules
Penn and USAJOBS both recommend PDF to keep the layout. Some portals ask you to paste the resume into a form instead, and USAJOBS caps federal resumes at two pages and 5 MB. The portal's own instructions outrank general advice, including this page's.
Choose the builder when: The job is outside the US federal government, where no single format is required and you want one document you can adapt for each application.
Choose the alternative when: You are applying for a US federal job. Federal resumes are limited to two pages, must show details such as hours worked per week, and the USAJOBS builder starts from your USAJOBS profile. Build that one there.
Choose the builder when: You want the layout rules above applied from the start, a scan for parsing risk, and a PDF that looks the same on the reader's screen as on yours.
Choose the alternative when: The portal names DOCX, or a recruiter needs an editable file to reformat before passing it on.
Choose the builder when: The resume is going into an online application, which is where career offices tell students to avoid columns, tables and graphics.
Choose the alternative when: You are handing a printed copy to a person and the design is part of what you are showing. Keep a single-column version for anything you upload.
Pricing boundary
The builder, its templates and its PDF export are free forever. The AI tools that touch keywords, such as job tailoring and deep scans, draw on credits; the paid products add AI capacity and priority, never a template or the file.

Direct answers
A document an applicant tracking system can read in the right order. Carnegie Mellon's career office puts it in three lines: avoid tables, text boxes and images, use one column, and put nothing in the header or footer. Penn adds standard section headings and a text-based PDF rather than an image.
Be wary of any fixed percentage. Each employer configures its own system, so there is no single rejection rate to quote. One biotech recruiter told Penn's career office her team uses Greenhouse but still reads the resumes for each role. Others use more automation. What you control is whether the file reads cleanly and whether it answers the posting.
Where they are true, yes. USAJOBS tells federal applicants that if a qualification names MS Project, the resume needs the words MS Project. Penn's guidance has the same limit built in: use the posting's terms when they accurately describe your background, and put them in context rather than only in a skills list.
Career offices advise against it. Carnegie Mellon calls a one-column resume ideal, and Penn lists multi-column layouts among the formats that can interfere with how ATS software reads a resume. If you use two columns anyway, copy the text out of your PDF into a plain editor; if the order comes out scrambled, a parser may read it that way too.
USAJOBS limits federal resumes to two pages under the Merit Hiring Plan and will not let you upload or build a longer one. For each job it asks for the employer, title, start and end month, hours worked per week and, for federal jobs, the series and grade. Files must be 5 MB or smaller, and it recommends a PDF.
No. A readable layout only means the system can find what you wrote. Harvard's career office says a resume alone won't get you a job or internship; whether you are invited depends on what the page says about your experience and on the people reading it.
